📖 Verse Breakdown & Explanation

To fully appreciate Daniel 2:20–21, it helps to understand the context:

King Nebuchadnezzar had a terrifying dream and demanded his advisors not only interpret it, but tell him what he dreamed without being told. When they couldn't, he ordered all the wise men—including Daniel—to be executed. Daniel prayed, and God revealed the dream and its meaning to him in a vision. Daniel’s immediate reaction was not pride or self-congratulation; it was a spontaneous outburst of worship.

Here is what these two key verses teach us:

1. Wisdom and Power Belong to God Alone (v. 20)

Human wisdom is limited, and human power is temporary. Daniel acknowledges that true intelligence and authority aren't self-made; they originate from God.

2. God Rules Over History and Seasons (v. 21a)

"Changes times and seasons": God controls both the natural cycles of creation and the spiritual/historical eras of human life. Nothing shifts by accident.
"Deposes kings and raises up others": Human empires rise and fall, but God is the ultimate Sovereign over global leaders, governments, and authorities.

3. God Generously Equips the Discerning (v. 21b)

God does not hoard His wisdom. He invites us to seek Him and promises to give clarity, knowledge, and discernment to those whose hearts are positioned to receive it.
