How to Step Out of the Boat

The night was suffocatingly dark, the kind of heavy, wet cold that settles deep into the bones. Somewhere out in the blackness, the Sea of Galilee was devouring itself.

Peter gripped the soaked timber of the fishing boat, his knuckles white against the dark wood. The wind screamed off the surrounding hills, whipping the spray into harsh, stinging needles. Twelve seasoned fishermen—men who knew the fickle temper of these waters—were utterly powerless. They had been rowing for hours, straining against a tide that refused to yield, trapped in the endless stretch between midnight and dawn.

Then came the movement on the water.

It didn't look human. A shadowed figure was stepping effortlessly over the churned crests of the waves, treading upon the deep as if it were dry, solid pavement. Fear, sharp and primal, struck the boat. "It's a ghost!" someone cried, the sound swallowed immediately by the gale.

Through the roaring wind came a voice, steady and calm, anchoring the storm: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

Peter, acting on an impulse woven of desperate faith and brazen boldness, leaned over the gunwale. "Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water."

"Come," Jesus said.

Peter didn't hesitate. He swung his legs over the side and stepped out. For a breathtaking moment, gravity failed. The turbulent liquid held his weight. He took one step, then another, his eyes locked onto the Master.

Then, the wind howled. A massive wave crested nearby, spraying cold water across his face. Peter glanced away. He looked at the churning depths beneath his feet, felt the ferocious gust, and panic surged. The moment he took his eyes off Jesus, the miracle gave way to reality. He began to sink like a stone into the freezing abyss.

"Lord, save me!" he screamed.

Immediately, a hand reached down into the dark water, locking around his wrist with absolute, unwavering strength. Jesus pulled him up, looking into his eyes with a mix of fierce love and gentle rebuke: "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

When they climbed back into the boat, the wind abruptly vanished. The water smoothed into glass.
