Amos was a shepherd and farmer called by God to prophesy to the Northern Kingdom of Israel during a time of great economic prosperity—but extreme spiritual and moral decay.

The people of Israel were going through the motions of worship:

Offering sacrifices.
Gathering for religious festivals.
Singing songs of praise.

Yet, outside the temple walls, the wealthy were exploiting the poor, judges were taking bribes, and systemic injustice was rampant. In Amos 5:21–23, God gives a shocking response to their worship: "I hate, I despise your religious feasts... Away with the noise of your songs!"

"Roll on like a river...": Amos uses the Hebrew word mishpat (justice), which refers to restoring rights, protecting the vulnerable, and rectifying wrongs. God wants justice to have momentum and power, like a rushing river that cannot be stopped.
"...a never-failing stream!": Israel was used to wadis—seasonal streams that dried up in the summer heat. God doesn't want intermittent, seasonal righteousness (tzedakah). He demands a continuous, year-round flow of right living and equity.
