Explanation of Isaiah 58:7

In Isaiah 58, God addresses Israel regarding true vs. false worship. The people were performing outwardly religious acts—like fasting and praying—yet complaining that God was not paying attention to them. God responds by revealing that their fasting is meaningless because they continue to exploit workers, quarrel, and act selfishly.

In verse 7, God defines what true fasting and honoring Him actually look like:

Sharing bread with the hungry: True devotion expresses itself through tangible care for those in immediate physical need.
Bringing the homeless/poor into your home: Faith requires hospitality and offering refuge and shelter to the vulnerable.
Clothing the naked: Meeting essential practical needs when you see someone suffering.
Not hiding yourself from your own flesh: Recognizing that every human being is your fellow family member under God. To turn away from someone in need is to turn away from your own humanity and family.

True worship is not merely abstaining from food or looking pious; it is actively loving, serving, and restoring those who are struggling.
